The love for motherland and sacrifice of the Veer Shiromani Maharana Pratap has always made the land of Mewar proud and gave inspiration to the prominent leaders like Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, former President, Republic of India and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister, Republic of India to achieve independence.

After the attainment of Indian independence, in the important work of the merger of the princely states H.H. Maharana Bhupal Singh Ji Mewar of Udaipur, the successful descendant of Maharana Pratap, voluntarily submitted a proposal for the merger of the princely state of Mewar with the Union of India. Overwhelmed by this patriotism of H.H. Maharana Bhupal Singh Ji Mewar of Udaipur, the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru himself visited Udaipur in the year 1954, then H.H. Maharana Bhupal Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur suggested to build a national monument of national hero Maharana Pratap in Udaipur. After deep deliberation, in a huge gathering of people held in Saheliyon ki Bari, H.H. Maharana Bhupal Singh Ji Mewar of Udaipur announced a grant of One Lakh Eleven Thousand Rupees for the grand statue of Maharana Pratap, which was welcomed by the people present with immense joy. Expressing his gratitude towards this generosity of H.H. Maharana Bhupal Singh Ji Mewar of Udaipur , Pandit Nehru promised full cooperation by the Central Government as well.

After consulting the eminent sculpture experts of the country, finally Mumbai sculptor Shree Shyam Rao Mhatre was entrusted with the task of making the statue of Maharana Pratap with his horse Chetak. The statue was built and kept in the palace of Udaipur because it was not decided where to install the statue. After that, this magnificent bronze statue was established in the year 1962, for which the state government provided 131 bighas of land free of cost. Also, its registration as an institution was done in 1962 with the aim of keeping the memory of Maharana Pratap lasting and building a huge national monument. In one of the meeting chaired by the then Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar of Udaipur, it was also decided to constitute a committee whose purpose was to establish this historical monument of Maharana Pratap at Moti Magri site as a world famous memorial site. Today only because of his tireless efforts this famous monument is well established & known as Maharana Pratap Smarak Samiti(MPSS), Moti Magri, Udaipur (Raj.).

स्वतंत्रता के अमर पुजारी प्रात: स्मरणीय वीर शिरोमणि महाराणा प्रताप के राष्ट्रप्रेम , त्याग और बलिदान ने मेवाड़ की भूमि को ऐतिहासिक गौरव से यशमंडित कर भारत के स्वाधीनता एंव राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी , डॉ.राजेन्द्र प्रसाद, पुर्व राष्ट्रपति, भारत गणराज्य एंव पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरु, पुर्व प्रधानमंत्री , भारत गणराज्य आदि प्रमुख नेताओं को स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति की सफल प्रेरणा दी है|

भारतीय स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के पश्चात देशी रियासतों के विलय के महत्वूर्ण कार्य में प्रताप के यशस्वी वंशधर महाराणा भूपाल सिंह जी मेवाड़ ऑफ़ उदयपुर  ने राजपूताने में सर्वप्रथम स्वेच्छा से मेवाड़ रियासत का भारत संघ में विलय का प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत किया था | महाराणा भूपाल सिंह जी मेवाड़ ऑफ़ उदयपुर  के इस राष्ट्र प्रेम से अभिभूत होकर तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरु  स्वयं वर्ष 1954 में उदयपुर पधारे, तब महाराणा भूपाल सिंह जी मेवाड़ ऑफ़ उदयपुर  ने उदयपुर में राष्ट्र नायक महाराणा प्रताप का एक राष्ट्रीय स्मारक निर्मित करवाने का सुझाव नेहरु जी के सम्मुख प्रकट किया | गहन विचार विमर्श के पश्चात  सहेलियों की बाड़ी में हुई  जनता की एक विशाल सभा में महाराणा भूपाल सिंह जी मेवाड़ ऑफ़ उदयपुर  ने महाराणा प्रताप की चेटकारूढ़ भव्य प्रतिमा के लिए एक लाख ग्यारह हज़ार रुपये के अनुदान की घोषणा की जिसका उपस्थित जनता ने अपार हर्षध्वनि से स्वागत किया | पंडित नेहरु ने महाराणा भूपाल सिंह जी मेवाड़ ऑफ़ उदयपुर  की इस उदारता के प्रति आभार प्रकट करते हुए केन्द्रीय सरकार द्वारा भी पूर्ण सहयोग देने का वचन दिया |

देश के ख्याति प्राप्त मूर्तिकला विशेषज्ञों से परामर्श कर अंततः मुंबई के मूर्तिकार श्री श्याम राव जी म्हात्रे को महाराणा प्रताप की चेटकारूढ़ प्रतिमा बनाने का कार्य सौपा गया | प्रतिमा निर्मित होकर उदयपुर के राजमहल में रखी रही क्योकि यह निर्णय नहीं हो पाया था कि प्रतिमा कहाँ स्थापित की जाये | तत्पश्चात इस भव्य चेटकारूढ़ कांस्य प्रतिमा की स्थापना वर्ष 1962 में की गयी जिस हेतु राज्य सरकार ने 131 बीघा भूमि नि:शुल्क प्रदान की है |  साथ ही  संस्था के रूप में इसका पंजीकरण 1962 में महाराणा प्रताप की स्मृति को चिरस्थायी बनाये रखने एंव एक विशाल राष्ट्रीय स्मारक के निर्माण के उद्देश्य से किया गया | तत्कालीन महाराणा भगवत सिंह जी मेवाड़ ऑफ़ उदयपुर  की अध्यक्षता में हुई बैठक में एक समिति गठन का भी निर्णय लिया गया जिसका उद्देश्य मोती मगरी स्थल पर  महाराणा प्रताप के इस  ऐतिहासिक स्मारक को विश्व प्रसिद्द  स्मारक स्थल के रूप में स्थापित करना था | आज उनके अथक प्रयासों के फलस्वरूप इस विख्यात  स्मारक को महाराणा प्रताप स्मारक समिति ,मोती मगरी, उदयपुर (राज.) के रूप में जाना जाता है |
